Young rider won't move when throttle engaged

This article is for the Kuberg Start, Trial, Trial Hero, Cross & Cross Hero.

Make sure that you are following the correct charging procedure, you can find a copy of this in the manual that came with your bike, or you can download a digital copy at https://www.kuberg.com/en/owners-manual

S‍ymptoms
When the throttle is twisted quickly there bike will not go, but when the throttle is twisted slowly, the bike will begin to move.

Troubleshoot

This troubleshoot will guide you on testing the three main components of the Kuberg Young rider bikes.

The batteries.
With older batteries, or batteries that haven't been charged or looked after properly, the battery's plates can become coated with lead sulphate, this means the batteries aren’t able to charge to capacity.

Our batteries have a capacity of 14.3V each, although the batteries will still be functional at lower voltages, below 13V is considered sub-optimal.

It may be possible to restore the performance of the bike by using a smart charger when charging. Some smart chargers have a recovery mode, in this mode, electricity pulsates through the plates within the battery to dislodge the sulphates and restore the battery's ability to take a charge.
(it should be noted that this is not guaranteed to work 100% of the time)

The other option is to replace the batteries. Not all batteries are created equal, and we have not tested every battery on the market, for this reason, we recommend using the same brand as the ones supplied with your bike.‍
Please contact Kuberg@Kuberg.com, or your local dealer who will be able to give you the latest options and prices for new and upgraded batteries.‍

The controller
  • First, disconnect the motor from the controller, you should be able to access this by removing the right-side panel.
  • Secondly, turn the bike on.
  • Thirdly, with a voltage meter, take a reading of the cable coming from the controller to the motor. At idle there may be some voltage but not much, twist the throttle to full and you should see the voltage jump up to 24V for the Kuberg Start, 36V for the Kuberg Trial and Cross, including the Hero models. Does the voltage increase in the same way when twisted slowly or quickly?
If you saw a voltage increase that corresponded to the twist of the throttle, then the controller signal is ok.

The motor
To test if the motor has a good connection, we can measure the voltage generated when we turn the motor by hand.
  • First, disconnect the motor from the controller, you should be able to access this by removing the right-side panel.
  • Secondly, with a voltage meter, take a reading of the cable coming from the motor to the controller.
  • Thirdly, turn the wheel, try a range of different speeds, you should see an increase in voltage as you turn the wheel faster.
If you saw a voltage increase with wheel speed, then the motor most likely has a good connection with the brushes that supply the power.
