Ranger/FreeRider/Challenger/X-Force: Jerky motor start

Symptoms: Jerky 48 V motor start

Our controller works with the motor’s Hall effect sensors to see the position of the rotor, so you can have hard acceleration immediately. If the Hall effect sensors fail, the controller will still be able to find the position of the motor. However, you might experience a jittery and jerky start for the first meter, until the motor starts spinning. Fortunately, as well as functioning without a Hall effect sensors, our controller is also capable of recalibrating them.

Solution: Recalibrating the Hall effect sensors
  1. Make sure, that the magnetic kill switch is in OFF position (magnet NOT attached).
  2. Place the motorcycle on a solid and level surface of a mounting stand, so that both wheels are on the ground.
  3. Each 48 V motor has 4 cables: 3 phase cables and 1 sensor cable.
  4. Disconnect the Hall effect sensor from the motor and inspect for any debris, that might inhibit the 6-pin connector. You will not need any tools to disconnect it.
  5. Reconnect once you have inspected both sides of the Hall effect sensor connections.
  6. Use Your left hand to hold the torque mode select button.
  7. Use Your right hand to twist the accelerator to full.
  8. Attach the magnet to the magnetic kill switch - the motorcycle will turn on as usual and beep three times. Continue to hold the torque mode select button and the accelerator in place.
  9. There will be a pause and another beep and the LED will flash red.
  10. Wait 2 seconds, then release the torque mode select button.
  11. Release the accelerator.
If You'll hear a high pitched beeping, the calibration process started successfuly. The motor will rotate in both directions in small increments, spin for a few seconds and then the motorcycle will behave normally.
