Motor whine
When the motor is engaged, it behaves perfectly normally with regard to its performance, but it may be accompanied by a high pitched whine or "screech".
Whining sounds come from windings and it is called
magnetostriction
. It is caused by the effect of alternating magnetic field (produced by the alternating electric currents) on the iron laminates of the core of (typically) the stator. The alternative magnetic field makes the laminates to have a slight vibration or “pulse”, which is then heard as a whine. This is normal for most high power AC motors and the same noise is best heard on a big transformers as there are no mechanical or aerodynamic noises.
