All models: Changing punched inner tube/tire with insufficient tread
WARNING!
If You don’t have suffcient mechanical knowledge, experience and proper tools, we strongly recommend, that You have these operations done by Your selling dealer or at Your local mo
torcycle service center!
The use of a tire changer is strongly recommended
.
Follow these steps to remove the tire from the wheel:
Required tools:
brush with hard plastic bristles
soft cloth
valve cap with valve wrench
wrench #12
the wrench #14
tire changer or at least 2 mounting levers
rim tape
technical alcohol
tire mounting paste or water with soap
compressor or air pump
Make sure, that the magnetic kill switch is in OFF position (magnet NOT attached) and the battery state of charge is very low.
Place the motorcycle on a solid and level surface of a mounting stand, so that both wheels are on the ground.
Manually clean any dirt from the wheel, chain, swingarm and brake calipers. A brush with hard plastic bristles and a soft cloth will be very useful here.
According to the manual, designated for the motorcycle, remove the wheel with a flat tire or with a tire with insufficient tread from the motorcycle.
CAUTION!
Removing the wheel from the motorcycle will affect the position of the motorcycle’s center of gravity on the mounting stand.
Using the valve cap with valve wrench loosen and remove the valve core from the inner tube to release any residual air.
If the wheel is equipped with a valve body nut, use the wrench #12 and loosen and remove it from the valve body altogether with the washer.
If the wheel is equipped with a tire spin lock, use the wrench #14 and loosen its nut all the way to the end of the bolt, but do not remove it completely.
Place the wheel on a tire changer and push the inner edge of the tire from the edge of the rim towards inside. Depending on a type of tire changer, proceed according to the tire changer manual.
If You do NOT have a tire changer, place the wheel on a workbench and by using both thumbs push the inner edge of the tire from the edge of the rim towards inside.
CAUTION!
Be careful and do NOT bent the brake disc. Use wooden blocks to support the wheel from the underside if needed.
Repeat previous step on the other side of the tire to detach the tire from the rim.
Put the 1st mounting lever for removing tires between the tire and the rim and gently fold the inner edge of the tire towards the outside of the rim. Do NOT start close to the valve body or the spin lock.
CAUTION!
Depending on what parta You are changing, be careful and do NOT damage the tire or the inner tube.
Secure the 1st mounting lever, holding the first piece of the tire out from the rim, in its position. Use a zip tie if needed.
Use the 2nd mounting lever and repeat the step #11. If it can NOT be done easily, start using both mounting levers at the same time, place them about 4" (10 cm) from each other and fold the inner edge of the tire towards the outside of the rim.
Slowly work Your way around the cicrumference of the rim, until one inner side of the tire is completely folded out from the rim. Use the 3rd mounting lever if needed.
Push the valve body inside the tire and slowly pull the inner tube out from the tire.
Keep the wheel in the same position and repeat steps #11 - 14 to fold the other side of the tire over the same rim edge as in previous steps and remove the tire.
Remove the old rim tape, clean the rim with a technical alcohol and inspect the rim properly for any damages or sharp edges, that could potentialy puncture the tire. Use an iron file if needed.
Clean the rim, let it dry completely and install the new rim tape to cover all inner holes in the rim.
Follow these steps to install the tire and inner tube back on the wheel:
If You're changing the inner tube only, using the light and Your fingers carefuly inspect the inner surface of the old tire
for any sharp edges, that would otherwise cause another flat tire.
Apply a tire mounting paste or water with soap on the contact surfaces of the rim and the new tire (or the old one, if You're changing the inner tube only).
Place the tire in front of or above the rim, put the 1st mounting lever for removing tires between the tire and the rim and gently fold the 1st inner edge of the tire towards the inside of the rim. Mind the correct tire rotation.
Slowly work Your way around the cicrumference of the rim, until the 1st inner side of the tire is completely folded in the rim. If it can NOT be done easily, finish folding using both mounting levers at the same time, place them about 4" (10 cm) from each other and fold the last part of 1st inner edge of the tire towards the inside of the rim.
Bolt the valve core into the valve body and partly inflate the new inner tube (or the old one, if You're changing only the tire) just enought for it to shape up.
Push the valve body of the inner tube through the rim and then insert it properly into the partly installed tire. The inner tube must NOT be twisted or shifted - the valve body must point straight to the wheel hub, when the installation is finished.
Reapply a tire mounting paste or water with soap on the contact surfaces of the new tire (or the old one, if You're changing the inner tube only), if needed.
Put the 1st mounting lever for removing tires between the tire and the rim and gently fold the 2nd inner edge of the tire towards the inside of the rim. Do NOT start close to the valve body or the spin lock.
CAUTION!
Be careful and do NOT damage the tire or the inner tube.
Keep the 1st mounting lever in its position and use the 2nd mounting lever to repeat previous step just about 4" (10 cm) left or right from the first lever. If it can NOT be done easily, start by using both mounting levers at the same time, place them about 4" (10 cm) or more from each other and fold the inner edge of the tire towards the inside of the rim.
Slowly work Your way around the cicrumference of the rim, until the 2nd inner side of the tire is completely folded in the rim. Repeatedly check the valve body, whether it is still pointing directly to the wheel hub and NOT sticking out diagonally, which would mean, that the position of the inner tube in the rim is shifted. Also check, whether the inner tube is NOT visible anywhere in between the rim and both inner edges of the tire. If so, fit the inner tube inside the tire, otherwise the inflantion would cut the inner tube immediately.
If the wheel is equipped with a valve body nut, reinstall the spacer and the nut onto the valve body, but just on the edge of the thread.
Push the valve body partly back into the rim for the tire to be able to attach to the rim correctly during inflanting.
Remove the valve body nut again and inflate the tire to 3 bar (44 psi). Spin the wheel and check, whether the tire fits the rim without any axial or radial run-out. You can overinflate the inner tube about 10% above the maximum tire pressure for a while just to help the tire to fit into the rim.
According to the manual, specific for each model, install the wheel back onto the motorcycle.
Be aware, that adding the front wheel to the motorcycle will affect the position of the motorcycle’s center of gravity on the mounting stand.
Double check, that all bolts and nuts are properly tightened
Set the pressure according to the exact tire specifications and also take into account riding conditions and rider’s weight.
